Contest #95 Answer: Acropolis of Athens, Greece

Rising above the modern-day city of Athens, is the best known acropolis in the world, the Acropolis of Athens.   This one should be fresh on everyone’s mind, considering Gary just visited Athens on his way to Italy.  Check out his whirl wind layover at the Acropolis.

Contest #94 Answer: Tonlé Sap, Cambodia

Tonlé Sap is the Great Lake of Cambodia, designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997.  This unique river-lake is home of many Cambodians who live in floating villages, and in once such village, Gary provided the entire school with notebooks and pencils.

**Gary’s Note** Tonle Sap is really amazing. It is literally the pulsing heart of Cambodia.  Every year it rises and falls with the flooding of the Mekong River. It can rise over 12m a year. On the lake there are floating villages which move with the river. I actually visited Tonle Sap twice during my stay in Cambodia. Once I visited some of the villages and the second time I traveled from Sieam Reap to Phonm Penh.

Where On Google Earth News

A few Reminders for everyone, and notes for anyone who is new to Where on Google Earth:

First, Welcome to the home of the Online Geography Game.  There are no prizes, other than bragging rights, so be sure to challenge your Family and Friends, it’s good wholesome fun.

We strongly recommend downloading the latest version of Google Earth, it is the best way to explore the world from your computer, and it is also helpful for finding and verifying your answers/guess for each contest.

Every ten contest, the Person with the most correct answers for that series will be given an opportunity to pick the images for the next series.   Former winner Milosh successfully answered all ten of the last series, So the runner up Max_Power will  be given the opportunity to choose the next series after the countdown to contest #100 series.   You can keep track of the current leader board on the right side of the page, and you can view previous winners by visiting the Past Winners Page.  A correct answer will get you on the leader board, but guesses and comments are always welcome and entertaining.

You can also download a custom KMZ file which will show the locations of all the Previous Contest, this will be updated after each contest.

A contest will be posted every 4-5 days, occasionally Hints will be offered as well, so be sure to get your answers in as quickly as you can.

Finally, a plug for Gary Arndt who is currently traveling the World, you can check out his adventure here, or follow him on twitter.

Contest #93 Answer: Pohnpei, Micronesia

This rough pentagonal shaped island of Pohnpei, Micronesia is the 93rd answer in the countdown to #100.  This is also the location of Nan Modal, a feature in Contest #16.  At only 6 months into his epic journey, Gary found an unspoiled paradise while on this Island, and called it the most beautiful island in the pacific.

*Gary’s Note* If there is one place I’ve discovered which I would consider a real hidden travel treasure, it is Micronesia, and in particular the island of Pohnpei. I was only there for three days but it was a great three days. Nan Modal is on a par with Easter Island in my mind, but it never has received the same level of attention (someone needs to write a book proposing that aliens built it).

Contest #92 Answer: Mungo National Park, NSW Australia

Mungo National Park Panorama
Mungo National Park Panorama

Gary battled the flies while visiting his first desert at Mungo National Park during his trip across Australia, read more about his visit(3/27/2008) to this World Heritage site.

*Gary’s Note* Mungo is one of the most underrated attractions in Australia. As you can see in the Google Earth photo, the large brown spot in the middle is a dry lake bed. The lighter crescent shape on the west and north end is a large sand dune known as the Wall of China. Mungo is significant as it is the location of some of the oldest modern Homo Sapien fossils on Earth, dating back 40-60,000 years. To get to Mungo, travel to Mildura, Victoria and you can drive or take day trips into Mungo. It is near the three-way border of NSW, Victoria, and South Australia.
