Tested in October, 1961, Tsar Bomba was the largest successful nuclear explosive device ever constructed. Rated at approximately 50 Mt, the resultant mushroom cloud reached at least 65 KM high.
Even though Tupolev Tu-95V that carried and deployed the bomb were able to get almost 30 miles away after the bomb was dropped before it exploded, the pilot and crew were given, at most, a 50% chance of survival.
