Harper Lee and Truman Capote grew up together in the small town of Monroeville, Alabama. The old courthouse here was used by both of them as the inspiration for courtroom scenes in their books. For Harper Lee, this was the setting of the trial of Tom Robinson who was accused of rape. Tom was defended by Atticus Finch, the protagonist of the story.
