A Swedish sailor who was shipwrecked and landed on the island in 1904, became its king after his marriage to the daughter of a local chief.
This apparently inspired Astrid Lindgren to make the father of Pippi Longstocking (a pirate) the king of “Kurrekurreduttön”, as the island is called in the book.
