Contest #168 answer: Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion Island, Indian Ocean

Piton de la Fournaise is one of the most active shield volcanos in the world. It is on French territory, on Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean.

There are over 150 registered eruptions in the last few hundred years, the most recent was a small one on 9 and 10 December, which was the third eruption this year.

Google Earth has some incredible detailled pictures of this site. When you zoom in on the centre of the volcano you can see the lava flow. And when you pan an bit to the west, there is a helicopter in flight visible.
