Contest #154 aswer: Mount Sinabung, Indonesia

Mount Sinabung is a volcano on the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. Its lasts known eruption before the current one dates from 1600. On August 29, it came to live again, causing the evacuation of 30,000 residents.

On September 3 there was another eruption, just after some of the evacuees returned to their homes and subsequently on September 7 another -more severe- one.

Vulcanologists are warning for more heavy eruptions in the next weeks and Mount Sinabung still has a ‘code red‘ alert on the Indonesian volcano watch page.

Contest #153 answer: Sukkur, Pakistan

The city of Sukkur was developed in the 12th century, at the island of Bukkhr which lies in the smallest part of the River Indus.

Because of this bottleneck, the area just above Sukkur is very vulnerable to flooding, as can be seen here in a recent (August 18) NASA picture.

We can hardly imagine the scale of this disaster, it is estimated that it affects more than 20 million people.

Contest #152 answer: Oradour-sur-Glane, France

The village of Oradour-sur-Glane was destroyed by a German Waffen-SS company on June 10, 1944. Nearly all the inhabitants, 642 men, women and children were killed for no apparent reason. The remains of the village were preserved as a memorial and the new village was built at the northwest of this site.
