Gertrude Stein and her partner Alice B. Toklas lived here from 1903 until 1938. In that time, their home welcomed the most amazing collection of painters, poets, writers, musicians, and other artists. Matisse bringing by his friends to see paintings he was working on at thier home (great lighting) rapidly became a weekly Saturday night event for the cream of the crop of the artists living in Paris. The collaborations that occurred there shaped the art of the day in many ways.
