At nearly 30 M high, the Peace Stupa of Zalaszántó is the the largest stupa in Europe. It was constructed under the leadership of a South Korean monk named Bop Jon to represent the Buddhist ideals of peace, happiness, and enlightenment. He chose this location because he felt that this area would be the most likely to accept the traditions of a religion from the east and not see it as an existential threat to the incumbent religions of the area.

The stupa was personally inaugurated by the Dalai Lama on June 17, 1993 and contains the only original relics of the Buddha to be located in Europe.
