Contest #726 — Ilinden Memorial, Kruševo, North Macedonia

Makedonium 09.JPG

This oddly shaped monument, also known as “Makedonium”, commemorates the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising of 1903, an insurgency against the occupying Ottoman Turks. The Macedonian people are taught that while this particular attempt at revolution was wildly unsuccessful (the Ottoman Empire regained any land lost to the insurgents and then took pretty ugly vengeance against the population for their support), that it represented the beginning of the efforts to obtain independence.

The monument itself includes the tomb of Nikola Karev, a local hero of the battles, and a bust of Toše Proeski, “The Elvis Presley of the Balkans”.
