Contest #597: Sendai Daikannon, Sendai, Japan

In Sendai there is a massive statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon, or Guanyin as she is also referred. The statue is exactly 100 M tall, making it one of the largest statues in the world.

Sendai Daikannon

Kannon is a highly revered Buddhist Divinity, the transporter of the souls of adherents to Sukhāvatī, and is often referred to in English as “The Goddess of Mercy”. In 1934, the Precision Optical Industry Company of Japan produced Japan’s first 35 mm camera which the company named after Kwannon after the Bodhisattva. Later, after the war, the company changed its name to Canon Camera Company, reflecting the success of its premier product.
