The Vikings were first to “discover” the American continent! This picture shows an aerial view of L’Anse aux Meadows, UNESCO World Heritage Site and Canadian National Heritage Site and archaeological site on the island of New Foundland, Canada. Icelandic viking explorer Leif Erikson arrived here around the year 1000, after Bjarni Herjólfsson reported having spotted land west of Greenland after being blown off-course in 985. Erikson was the first European who landed in America (excluding Greenland).
