  1. Caroline Atoll, also called Thornton Island or Millennium Island. Coral formation in the Central and Southern Line Islands, part of Kiribati, in the southwestern Pacific Ocean.

    Interestingly, a monument there which commemorates this event dates it January 1 2000, which was actually the beginning of the last year of the 2nd millennium, not the beginning of the 3rd.
