Whew, I can go home now! I had to give this a shot without the assist (By the way, Ben, that ancient empire hint threw me way off looking in Turkey, etc). That is Merapi in Central Java, Indonesia. I loaded this KMZ and just went nuts: http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/globallists.cfm?listpage=googleearth
Focusing the search, I saw that the altitude was such that vegetation could not grow at the top, so I could eliminate a lot of shorter volcanoes and volcanic fields. But at the lower elevations, it was quite green, so it was likely to be closer to the equator.
This is a LOT of fun – thanks for putting this together Tara. I could look at maps all day – this gives me an excuse. I found this site through Ben via Facebook.
Woops, Tara did the WordPress adaptation 😛 I mean, thank you Gary!
