Contest #195 answer: Bastøy prison, Oslofjord, Norway

About 75 km south of Oslo, in the Oslofjord lies Bastøy Island, a minimum security prison with appr. 115 inmates.

It is to my believe the most liberal prison in the world, without armed guards or barbed wire. The main problem is not prisoners wanting to escape, but to keep visitors out of the prison.

And the reoffending rate of inmates who served their sentence here is by 16% the lowest in the world.

This is a fascinating documentary about prison life on Bastøy

It was hardly to be missed this week: the eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcano on June 4. It was its first eruption since 1960, and spectacular it was:

The smoke plume of this eruption disturbed the air traffic as far as Australia. And the planes in the neighbourhood were grounded.

Contest #192 answer: Fleury-Mérogis Prison, France

A few miles south of Paris, in the suburb Fleury-Mérogis, lies the Fleury-Mérogis Prison. It houses 3,800 prisoners, which is relatively small when you compare it to the prisons in the USA , but it is Europe’s largest jail complex.

It was built in the years 1962-1968 by leading French architect Guillaume Gillet (prix de Rome, 1946)
