The island Frauenchiemsee, often called Fraueninsel, is the second largest of the three islands in Chiemsee, district Rosenheim, Bavaria, Germany.

In the south is the Frauenwörth Abbey, a convent of Benedictine nuns.
The monastery was founded in 782 by Tassilo III, Duke of Bavaria, making Frauenwörth the eldest German speaking convent beyond the alps.
It is famous for the monastery’s liquor spirit, which is produced by the nuns.
The island is accessible by ship year round. About 50 little houses with ca 250 inhabitants, including an artist colony, 6 families are fishermen, neither cars nor bikes are allowed.
The walkway around the island is 1,7 km long, duration to walk 25 min. At christmas time a wonderful market takes place around the island.
The small isle is the Krautinsel (herb island), and south of it the largest island: Herrenchiemsee with the castle from King Ludwig II of Bavaria, based on the model of Versailles.
Art, tradition and nature have been impressively preserved through the more than twelve-hundred-year-old monastery and the “old fishing village”. They make the island a gem of Bavarian culture and way of life
