Contest #243 answer: Leshan Giant Buddha, Mount Emei Scenic Area, China
Some 3000 years ago, during the Tang Dynasty, the Leshan Giant Buddha was carved out of a cliff at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China.
Since 1996 this area is on the World Heritage list of UNESCO and it survived the 2008 Sichuan earthquake without damage.

Contest #242 answer: Fort Eben-Emael, Belgium
Fort Eben-Emael was in its time the largest fort in the world. Constructed between 1931 and 1935 for defending Belgium against a German attack, it was considered to be impregnable.
However it was not quite protected against paratroopers and on 10 may 1940 it took the German army only 15 minutes to destroy the armament, which led to the surrender of the fort on 11 may 1940.
For those interested: here is a kmz file which gives an overlay of the German military drawings.
Nowadays the fort is open to the public.
