Contest #247 answer: Montrail County, near New Town, North Dakota, USA

This part of North Dakota is recently ‘enriched’ by numerous oil fracking sites. Thanks to the controversial rock fracturing technique the number of oil rigs in this area had exponentially grown since 2008.

I did want to show you an animation of the increasing number of tracking sites in this area, but the video seems to be off line at the moment. Sorry for that.

Contest #246 answer: Jardim Gramacho landfill, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

This used to be the place where Rio de Janeiro dumped its waste. It is the largest landfill in Southern America and one of the largest in the world.

It closed down recently after 34 years in operation.
It was featured in the documentary ‘Waste Land’

Note: I prepared this contest on wednesday, June 6. On the same day Google Earth updated the imagery of this site, which I did not notice until some of you alerted me when the contest was live.

To give everyone a fair chance, I decided not to update this contest with the new imagery.
