The answer to contest #49 is California City, California. The city so nice, they named it twice. Unfortunately, it wasn’t nice enough to actually get people to live there. The original plan of building a giant city in the Mohave desert I guess fly with people. There are 80,000 acres of land dedicated to the city, complete with abandoned, named roads, which you can see in the photo.

Boy, Karel is really throwing some tough ones. The last two have really separated the wheat from the chaff. The 3D layer was really throwing a curve.

The answer is Marvao, Portugal, a place I can say with all honesty I have never heard of before this contest (note to self, when in Portugal, visit Marvao.)

The castle in Marvao was built in the 13th century, and is an excellently preserved example of the period.

Sorry for the delay in getting this one up. I was in Bintan, Indonesia the last week and Internet access was sparse to say the least. I’m in lovely Kuala Lumpur right now and have all you can eat wifi.

This was probably one of the harder contests we’ve had, as everyone noted in their submissions. The answer is the Philae Templein the Nile river in Egypt. Many of the ancient temples on the island were moved when the Answan High Dam was constructed. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Agilika island was also accepted as an answer.

Karel stayed at home for contest #46 picking the Maeslantkering storm barrier in the Rotterdam Harbor in the Netherlands. The barrier is part of the Deltawerken project to prevent flooding of the lowlands, after the great 1953 flood.

FYI, if we should have a tie for winner this set of contests (41-50), winning a past set will be used as a tie breaker. So even if you don’t get to do 51-60, getting all 10 correct will still set you up to pick locations for a future contest.

This one was pretty simple for me. I had previously been to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, which is of the same, distinctive star shaped design as the fort in the image. I had a hunch it was an American fort built in the 19th century. The star shape and sloped walls were built so the fort had no 90 degree angles. That way canon balls wouldn’t hit the wall with full force and would glance off the wall.

I had been reading (listening actually, with audiobooks) a lot of Revolutionary War history, so my first guess was New York….and I was right. It is Governor’s Island.
