Contest #114 answer: Large Hadron Collider

Well, I underestimated you all. I thought this one would be harder to guess, as there are hardly any visible clues of the object which this contest points at. It is the Large Hadran Collider, situated at the French-Swiss border near Geneva. Built in commission of Cern, it is a 26.5 km in circumference (that is 16.5 miles, for the non-SI speaking) and located at a depth of 50-150 m (160-500 ft).

It actually successfully fired the first collision beam in the week I published this contest.

There is a dedicated LHC website at Cern with lots of interesting information.

To get an idea of the sheer size and the location of the supporting buildings, just download this kmz file and open it in Google Earth. It has some 3D renderings of the buildings and an animation of the colliding beams.

Contest #113 answer: Arromanches, France

Lots of people got this one right: It was the main port for the invasion of Normandy in 1944: Port Winston.

Arromanches

Located at the shores of Arromanches the allied forces constructed a Mulberry Harbour for the supply of the troops which were set out to liberate occupied Europe from the Germans. The remains of the harbour are still out there and visible in google Earth.

Updated .kmz file

Due to some permission errors in the previous kmz file, I had to recreate a new one. So if you’ll like to keep track of the previous WhereOnGoogleEarth locations you should replace your old file with this new one.

Contest #112

Next one is a little harder. I zoomed out a bit to make things easier, but you should name the location which is in the centre of the picture.

Contest #111 answer: Tenerife with Teide volcano

It is the highest mountain in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world: Mount Teide (Pico del Teide) on the Island of Tenerife in the Atlantic Ocean.

The volcano and its surroundings are on the National Heritage list of the UNESCO.

Due to the quality of the atmosphere there is a Telescope Observatory near the summit.

Some say that the next eruption could trigger a mega-tsunami which could threaten the East Coast of the USA, but according to others this is very unlikely.

Those who reached the summit in time:

  • Milosh, Serbia
  • Ivar Bonsaken
  • Michael T
  • Skip
  • Willem
  • David S.

Contest #111

OK, to get things going again, we’ll start the next series with an easy one.

I will be aiming for weekly updates on a fixed day, which will be on Friday, the next few months. This will give you a predictable time frame for your searches and gives me a good opportunity to incorporate it in my weekly duties.
