Contest #126 answer: Ailsa Craig, Firth of Clyde, Scotland

The Winter Olympics are in full swing and one of the most peculiar events is Curling.

curling

Originated in medieval Scotland and once popular in the low Countries,  nowadays 90% of the curling players are Canadian.

The curling stones are preferably made of a very special kind of granite (Riebeckite granite), only found in Ailsa Craig, a small island off the coast of Scotland in the Firth of Clyde.

ailsa craig

Ailsa Craig is basically an extinct volcano and has no population. The granite quarry is now closed but there still is a supply for stone making that will last until 2020.

(Oh, and I will never try to predict again wether a contest will be hard to find or not…)
