Contest #644 – Klovharu, Porvoo, Finland

The author of the Moomin books, Tove Jansson, and her partner Tuulikki Pietilä spent summers in the cabin on this tiny island in the Gulf of Finland. Most of Jansson’s works were written either entirely or partly in this cabin.

Tours of the island and cabin are available, but only for a very short window in mid to late July. Only 8 persons at a time can visit the island and the boat only goes over once per day during the touring window of about 7-10 days, depending on weather, bird nesting, etc.

Contest #640: Xiluodo Dam, Sichuan, China

The Xiluodo Dam is a major power producer in Sichuan. With an annual output of approximately 55 terawatt/hours, it ranks as the 3rd largest producing power generation plant on the planet. Just this plant produces more power than such entire countries as Greece, Denmark, and Peru. This one site produces enough renewable power that if it was a country, it would be the 17th largest generator in the world.

Built in 2005, the dam also provides vital flood control for the region.

Those who flowed through the Xiluodo before the hint were:

  • Lighthouse
  • Paul Voestermans

Contest #639: Taleghan Solar Hydrogen Energy System, Iran

Yeah, that was a tough one. Hearty congrats to those who found it, especially before the hint.

Taleghan is a hybrid solar energy plant. During the day, a portion of the energy produced by the PV cells is used to hydrolyze water to obtain H2, which is stored in high-pressure tanks until needed. At night, that hydrogen is used to drive fuel cells, which replace the solar generation.

Only 2 found it before the hint:

  • Garfield
  • Lighthouse

After the hint, we had a few more:

  • Walter_V_R
  • Martin de Bock
  • Graham Hedley
  • Paul Voestermans
