It is with a heavy heart that we share some deeply sad news with the WOGE community. Our long-time community friend, Walter_V_R of Deurne, Belgium, has recently passed away.
As you may know, Walter was a dedicated and welcoming moderator of the Fun & Games board at Google Earth Community. He was a true “map junkie”, eclipse chaser and satellite sleuth whose passion for geographic discovery predated this current platform by many years. He was a highly active participant in the original Google Earth forum, as well as in our WOGE forum.
Whether he was solving a complex, cryptic riddle, or gracefully managing the board to keep it a fun, welcoming space for everyone, Walter brought a brilliant mind and a kind spirit to our digital corner of the world. He truly loved the journey of exploring the globe from his screen.
He has also been one of the strongest players for a very long time, standing still at No.9 on the all-time top players list of WOGE.
(I looked it up: he posted his first answer here on July 11, 2012 and – sadly – the last one on October 11, 2025.)
He will be profoundly missed, both as a brilliant image analyst and as a major contributor to our community.

I’m sorry to hear about the loss of our fellow player Walter. His presence in our game will be missed.
It is hard to find words of comfort when someone who has accompanied us for part of our journey says goodbye forever.
