The geographical center of Hungary is located about 1 kilometer northeast of the village of Pusztavacs at 47° 11′ N and 19° 30′ E. The adjacent nature reserve, which is part of the Duna–Ipoly National Park, covers an area of 4.6 hectares.
The tower marking the centerpoint was designed by architect József Péter Kerényi . It is an 11-meter-high, octagonal pyramid on a reinforced concrete frame with a roof made of larch planks. A golden hemisphere spire on top marks the point. The sundial is the work of sculptor Gábor Gáti. The tower was burnt down in 2001 and rebuilt in 2004.
A somewhat different conclusion was reached in this regard by Dr. Tamás Telbisz (ELTE TTK Department of Natural Geography), who in 2019 re-performed the necessary calculations using the most modern GIS system available to him, from which he concluded that the geographical center is actually located between the villages of Dabas and Hernád, a few hundred meters from one of Hernád’s outer streets (coordinates: 47° 10′ 06″ N, 19° 23′ 44″ E), 8.4 km west-southwest of the currently recognised location where this tower stands.
