This Gurudwara is very important and historic for Sikhs. It is one of 5 Takhts (thrones of authority). It was the site of the death of the 10th and final human guru of the religion, and the place where the central holy scripture of Sikhism was finalized. The name Hazur Sahib translates to “Presence of the Master”. The current structure was completed in 1837.
The Sikh religion is unique in many ways. One is the level of reverence given to thier foundational text, the Guru Granth Sahib. Compiled from the early 1500s through about 1710 by the 10 human gurus, the scripture was declared perfect by the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, just before his death here at Hazur Sahib. From that point forward, the Guru Granth Sahib is regarded as the 11th and enternally living guru by Sikhs. Each copy is cherished as one would the leader of a faith, and if a copy becomes damaged beyond repair, it is treated as the death of such a leader, ritually cremated in a ceremony called Agan Bheta.
