The Narmada River is a goddess and river in Hinduism. All banks along the Narmada are sacred. An important annual festival, Narmada Jayanti, celebrates the peace and prosperity that Narmada brings to devotees.

In the 19th century in what is now called Narmadapuram, the wealthy Sharm family was approached because the people in town found it very difficult to reach the river. Jankibai Sethani of that family stepped up and funded the construction of this ghat, one of the largest in centra India. To thank her, the ghat carries her name to this date.
