# 477 The Cissbury Ring, South Downs, West Sussex, UK

The Ring dates from around 250 BCE, built as a fortress. It has also been used as a flint mine, among other things. During WWII it was used as a camp for the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in preparation for the Normandy landings. It also housed a large artillery piece for shooting at ships in the English Channel. Currently the National Trust and local police are concerned that illicit use of metal detectors on the protected site is damaging the place: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-sussex-38101813

Less of a vertical shot:

Map of the, ahh, Butterfly Walk, at the Ring. I am not making that up.

View from the Bostal Road:

Walking the Ring. The young man might almost be carrying a bow.

And finally, the layout of the shafts and galleries of the flint mines. Followers of the latest series of Poldark will get the idea.

Contest #476: Peberholm, part of the Øresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden

This apparent road to nowhere actually goes from a bridge into a tunnel. Peberholm, the island in the foreground, is an artificial construction built to make the transition from bridge to tunnel. WOGE player JF tells us “The larger island to the North is Saltholm, meaning “salt island”, so when the smaller artificial island to the south was built for the bridge they naturally called it “pepper island”…” The whole thing connects Malmo, Sweden, with Copenhagen, Denmark. In this pic we are looking towards Sweden. This is the longest combined road/rail bridge in Europe. A spectacular construction.

The tunnel, Drogden by name, looks like this:

Looks like most tunnels on the inside. Nothing to see here, folks, move along:

Crossing the bridge is an entirely different matter:

Here’s a bigger overall picture, with the bridge/tunnel aimed at Copenhagen:
