Contest #398: in the middle of the tundra south of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada

This remote location along the Hudson Bay Railway from The Pas to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada is a source of gravel used for the construction of the railway across many miles of open tundra. The gravel is used to protect the permafrost from melting and swallowing up the railway. This railway was built to provide Canadian farmers with a quicker way to get their wheat from the fields to Europe through the port of Churchill.

The railway is currently run by the Hudson Bay Railway Company, which also serves the mine and smelter at Thompson, Manitoba.
