Contest #392: Piqua (Ohio, USA) Nuclear Generating Station

This early nuclear power plant was started in the late 1950s, going critical in 1963. During the 3 years it was in operation, it produced about 45 megawatts of electricity, using an experimental organically cooled reactor.

After some issues with the plant in 1966, the decision was made that the further operation of the plant was not cost effective, and it was decommissioned. The reactor fuel was removed and the reactor vessel was entombed in concrete. Radiation levels at the plant are low enough that the parts of the plant not entombed are actually used by the city of Piqua as offices.
