Contest #244 answer: Buddhas of Bamiyan, Afghanistan

Until 2001 this was an UNESO World Heritage site: The Buddhas of Bamiyan in Central Afghanistan.

About 500 AD these Buddhas were carved out of the cliffs in the Bamiyan valley, but they were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
