Contest #63 Answer – Astana, Kazakhstan

Skip has pick Astana, Kazakhstan, in particular the presidential plaza. You like?

Astana is the “new” capital of Kazakhstan since 1997. Like any made up capital (Brazila, Washington, Canberra) you need lots of funky buildings and monuments. Astana delivers in that department in spades.

Those who guess correctly for Gloriousness of Kazakhstan:

Contest #62 Answer: Soo Locks, Michigan/Ontario

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.

-Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot

For contest 62, Skip has taken us to the border of Michigan and Ontario to the Soo Locks in Sault St. Marie, MI/ONT. The locks connect Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. They are the busiest locks in the world with over 12,000 ships per year passing through them.

Sorry for delays in getting the new contest up and the leader board. I’m in Cambodia right now with Vietnam and Laos next on the agenda. The internet here is less than optimal.

Contest #60 Answer: Victoria Falls

I thought more people would have gotten this one. It is Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia. It is, depending on how you define it, the largest waterfall in the world.

Those who took the plunge this time:

  • Ewen
  • Lotsofcats
  • Keith M
  • Pan
  • Skip (Austin, TX)
  • Milosh, Serbia
  • Andy McConnell

There will be a slight delay in getting contest #61 up. I’m currently in Angkor Wat.
